This production called for an achromatic color palette, so my focus shifted toward creating depth and visual interest through pattern, texture, and detail. Working within these limitations allowed me to give meticulous attention to both characters, fully constructing the Woman’s costume. Because the show was staged in thrust, it was essential that the costumes held up both up close and from every angle.
The first character, the Man, who embodies multiple role, relies on mannerism rather than costume changes. His woolen, matte garments echo the set, giving him a rustic presence and allowing him to recede into shadows and reemerge with a ghostlike ease. In contrast, the Woman’s costume, though also black, was designed to remain visible when the Man disappeared. Lace textures and subtle shine in her fabric catch the light, giving her a distinct, enduring presence onstage.
